Blu-ray Disc
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The name Blu-ray Disc is derived from the blue-violet laser used to read and write this type of disc. Because of its shorter wavelength (405 nm), substantially more data can be stored on a Blu-ray Disc than on the DVD format, which uses a red (650 nm) laser.

Blu-ray Disc Association
Usage:
Data storage, High-definition video, and PlayStation 3 games Blu-ray Disc (also known as Blu-ray or BD) is a high-density optical disc format for the storage of digital information, including high-definition video.

A Blu-ray Disc can store 50 GB, almost six times the capacity of a DVD. Blu-ray was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group of companies representing consumer electronics, computer hardware, and motion picture production. The standard is covered by several patents belonging to different companies. As of March 2007, a joint licensing agreement for all the relevant patents had not yet been finalized.[2] As of February 12, 2008, 493[3] titles had been released on Blu-ray Disc in the United States (32 of those titles have since been discontinued). As of October 9, 2007, 179 titles had been released in Japan, with 55 additional titles planned for release.[4] The Blu-ray standard is currently in a format war with its rival HD DVD, to determine which of the two formats will become the leading carrier for high-definition content to consumers.

Nearline storage - Derived from where 'Nearline' is a contraction of Near-online. Nearline storage is a term used in computer science to describe an intermediate type of data storage. It is a compromise between online storage (constant, very rapid access to data) and offline storage (infrequent access for backup purposes or long-term storage). It is called so because the storage system knows on which volume (disc) the data is, and usually asks a robot to retrieve it from its physical location (discs are held in a library of slots) and put into a disc drive to access it and thus bring the data it contains online. This process is not instantaneous, but it only does require a few seconds, hence the initial description. New Blu-Ray disc libraries hold very large amounts of data (Up to 34TB) in one device.
Medical Imaging - Medical imaging refers to the techniques and processes used to create images of the human body (or parts thereof) for clinical purposes (medical procedures seeking to reveal, diagnose or examine disease) or medical science (including the study of normal anatomy and function). As a discipline and in its widest sense, it is part of biological imaging and incorporates radiology (in the wider sense), radiological sciences, endoscopy, (medical) thermography, medical photography and microscopy (e.g. for human pathological investigations).

Archive To Disc - An archive refers to a collection of records, and also refers to the location in which these records are kept. Archives are made up of records which have been created during the course of an individual or organization's life. In general an archive consists of records which have been selected for permanent or long-term preservation. Records, which may be in any media, are normally unpublished, unlike books and other publications. Archives may also be generated by large organizations such as corporations and governments. Archives are distinct from libraries insofar as archives hold records which are unique. Archives can be described as holding information "by-products" of activities, while libraries hold specifically authored information "products". The word 'archives' is the correct terminology, whereas 'archive' as a noun or a verb is related to computer science.
Archival Quality Discs - Products manufactured by Taiyo Yuden are considered to be some of the best among enthusiasts, and are also used by drive manufacturers and Sony PlayStation game developers.

Taiyo Yuden discs are considered one of the best discs on the market according to Digital Faq. Digital Faq rates TY discs with a 95-100% reliability rating. Other high quality discs include discs with Sony, MCC (Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation/Verbatim) and Maxell media code discs.

Taiyo Yuden branded products are not common outside of Japan (where Taiyo Yuden media has a market share of about 60%) but unbranded CDs and DVDs are available from some online retailers.
